The Nightflyers

Donald Fagen recently announced his second ever (proper) solo tour. The first was in 2006, in support of Morph the Cat. It featured many of the players from the current  Steely Dan touring band. His backing band this time around are musicians from places near Fagen’s Woodstock, New York home. The Nightflyers, named for Fagen’s debut LP The Nightly (1982), features Connor Kennedy (guitar, vocals), Lee Falco (drums, vocals), Brandon Morrison (bass, vocals) and Will Bryant (keyboards, vocals).  These are local guys, all hailing from Ulster county, but they reportedly have earned a stellar reputation in the area.  They have worked with other musicians such as Kate Pierson of the B-52s and Bill Payne of Little Feat. And from the press release, Donald and the band “… have been performing together in haunts, joints, dives, and even a few reputable establishments, up and down New York’s Hudson River Valley and beyond.”

I already have my tickets. We can expect the setlist to focus heavily on Donald’s solo material. This will almost certainly include songs from his most recent Sunken Condos (2012). But there are no horns in the band, and all four guys sing. Plus some of the venues are a bit smaller and more intimate than the ones Steely Dan typically plays.  Should definitely be a bit different. I’m very excited.
