Although Donald is touring with The Nightflyers this year, you can still catch Steely Dan in concert as well. Live Nation and Irving Azoff have announced their answer to last year’s Dessert Trip. The Classic West and Classic East concerts featuring Steely Dan, Eagles, The Doobie Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, Earth Wind & Fire, and Journey will take place over the course of two weekends in July. Although, he parted ways with Live Nation some time ago, this is definitely the brainchild of Azoff; all six of these bands remain his clients. The Classic West is slated for July 15-16 in Dodger Stadium, LA, and the Classic East, 2 weeks later on July 29-30 in Citi Field, NYC.
These concerts will mark the first time the Eagles have performed since the death of Glenn Frey earlier this year. I must admit this gave me pause initially. I thought, “How can the Eagles perform without Glenn Frey?” However, it has been revealed that, filling in for Glenn will be none other than his son Deacon. (Knowing that Glenn was a huge Dan fan, I can only speculate the origin of the name.) After having initially declared that the Eagles were done, Don Henley said in an interview with Dallas sports radio KTCK, that Deacon is a “very talented young man …. He’s enthusiastic about it and he’s been working real hard on it, and he’s gonna do it with us. And I think that’s appropriate.” This might just work as a nice tribute to Glenn — assuming Deacon has the chops. 🙂 There are also rumors that Jackson Browne and Vince Gill may join the Eagles on stage.
Sadly, Maurice White of Earth Wind & Fire also passed away earlier this year. I’m sure he will be missed, although he hasn’t toured with the band since 1994 because of his progressing Parkinson’s disease. On a happier note, Christine McVie, who rejoined Fleetwood Mac in 2014, will be performing with the band for a revival of the classic Rumours lineup. A chance to attend an event like this may not come again. It should fun, but you’ll have to make the trek to LA or NYC.
Dan also plays Blues Fest in October:
October 28 = Dublin @ The 3 Arena
October 29 – London @ The O2 Arena
